Earthenware pottery with cat pawmark found in Himeji! ?
2007年に兵庫県姫路市の見野古墳群発掘調査にて、6号墳から、小型の獣の足跡がついた珍しい土器が発掘されました。専門家の調査によるとネコの足跡の可能性が高いとされています。古墳に副葬するための土器を乾燥させていたところ、踏まれたものでしょう。実は、ネコはいつから日本にいたのか、よくわかっていないんです。この足跡がネコだとすると、古墳時代後期にはこの地にネコがいたことが分かる貴重なものです。「見野の郷交流館」では、この足跡付きの須恵器のレプリカを展示しています。ぜひ、古代のロマンを感じてくださいね♪
In 2007, during the excavation work of Mino Kofun Group in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture, a rare Sue ware with the pawmarks of a small animal was found in No. 6 Kofun.
According to the expert, they are highly imagined to be cat pawmarks.
While drying earthenware as a product for burial, it could be stepped by a cat.
It is not sure that how long cats have been in Japan.
If the pawmarks are to be cat’s ones, it can be proved that cats lived in late Kofun period.
The replica of this Sue ware with the pawmark is on display at Mino no Sato Community Center.

In Shigo Himeji City, there exist not only Mino Kofun, Miyayama Kofun, Nagatsuka Kofn and Mino kofun group which are designated by Hyogo Prefecture as a cultural property but also over 80 Kofuns such as Abo kofun group calld lAbo no hyakuanaJ. At Mino Community Center, they always display goods out of Mino Kofun Group and at Himeji Buried Cultural Property Center, they keep, arrange, analize and restore in order to dispatch the information. Please don’t fail in feeling the history of Shigo touring around the Kofuns of much romance and 2 facilities.

Definition of Kofun
After the Yayoi Period, the period from the latter half of the 3rd century to the 7th century is called the Kofun Period. It was the time when the classified society was formed and especially strong political power was focused on the Yamato Government. Kofun is a large-scale tomb which was made in order to bury the ruling people at that time.
